About Us

THE STORY SO FAR

Best of Houzz 2014The Couture Rooms launched in 2008. We started with a beautiful little showroom in Edinburgh offering interior design services alongside the retail of high-end wallpapers, fabrics, lighting, furniture and accessories. We spent 5 wonderful years there but as demands changed we began to receive more clients by referral and the phone never stopped ringing with orders. So in Best of Houzz 20152013 we decided to close the showroom, build a beautiful workroom at the bottom of the garden and focus on building the website. Since then we have won "Best in Design" two years running on Houzz where images of our work have been saved and shared over 75,000 times!

So that's where we are now, at the bottom of the garden, like gnomes with impeccable taste! The commute is a breeze and as we are no longer tied to the showroom 9-5 we have more time to focus on sourcing new products for the website and sharing with you some of what we've learned over the years.

WHO ARE WE?

HelenMy Mother was creative, she made me beautiful handmade clothes, one very chic black and white striped confection sticks in my mind. She also loved to decorate. She once bought 50 sheets of gorgeous grey wrapping paper and pasted them all over my bedroom wall, I loved it. She always saw beyond the box, I'm like that too.

As a child I loved making things. Paper glue and scissors at the kitchen table kept me enthralled for hours. My first flat had billowy curtains made from painted sheets - very Bloomsbury Set!

I’ve had an interesting and varied career (always creative, I can’t help it) with interiors projects in London, Spain and Aspen,Colorado with detours into miniature sculpting, both edible and non edible - I had a spell as Cake Maker to the Stars. Oh my!
Teddy
Interiors however are my passion and I’m happy and excited to be working with my lovely daughter and sharing with you some of the wonderful things we have found.

I live in a leafy village suburb of Edinburgh with my 2 Miniature Schnauzers, Minnie and Teddy.

MY STYLE - I love how the quiet and humble can bring the gilt down a peg or two
FAV PASTIMES - Walking by the river with my dogs and escaping to virtual worlds to create magical places. I like to kill dragons, that's a guilty secret right there...
DESIGN TIP - Always include something in the room that reflects the light
LIKES - Kindness and creativity
DISLIKES - Arrogance and gammon
LUSTING AFTER - Elizabeth’s Cabinet by Young & Battaglia. Just need to find somewhere to put it
JUST SAYING - "Be yourself; everyone else is taken." -Oscar Wilde

AlexisI grew up in a household driven by creativity. As a child I was lucky enough to have at my disposal an art cupboard filled to the brim with all the tools and materials I could ever need to flex my creative mind, everything from clay and resin to watercolours and batik were in that cupboard and I tried them all!

In my early 20's I graduated from Napier University with an honours degree in Design Futures. I used my new found knowledge to pursue a variety of creative endeavours, graphic design, furniture making, interior design & teaching (to name just a few!) I live at home with my husband, son and 2 rescue dogs, Cleo and B-Boy Blake.

MY STYLE -
Eclectic with a mix of vintage and modern, always pairing old with new.
FAV PASTIME - Upcycling, renovating, travelling and walking the dogs (on sunny days!)
DESIGN TIP - You don't have to make everything match, symmetry is good but don't be scared to mix it up.
LIKES - Modernism
DISLIKES - Intolerance
LUSTING AFTER - A pair of Jinkos to hang either side of my bed
JUST SAYING - "Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching." -C.S. Lewis
